Wax & Wane: K.A. Hardway

Kristy Hardway

K.A. Hardway was born and raised in North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, son, and many pets.

She has loved writing since she was old enough to do it. She writes mostly horror/supernatural stuff, often laced with elements of heart-tugging nostalgia and bright spots of cheeky, irreverent humor.

She just started getting her feet (or maybe just a pinky toe) wet in the getting-published-pool in 2014.

Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, William Faulkner, and Joyce Carol Oates are her tip-top favorite authors.

She spends most of her time finding her own voice, honing her skills, reading, and trying not to let all her ideas make her forget where she’s going while she’s driving.

Wax & Wane: A Circle of Nine

What is your story about?
“A Circle of Nine” is about a young woman who unwittingly comes into her own power as a witch. Although she is drawn to the occult by its alluring mystery, on some level she remains skeptical of magic. When things become all too real for her, she is overwhelmed with fear and intimidated by her new ‘circle of friends.’

What do you like most about witches?

I like the fact that truly witchy gals are really just children of nature. No pointy hats. No brooms. No casting evil spells or turning people into frogs. Just a strong desire to maintain harmony by being respectful and gaining wisdom.

Who is your favorite fictional or legendary witch, and why?

That’s a tough one. I like Glenda the Good Witch from Wizard of Oz, all because of her most famous line: “Only bad witches are ugly.” I think that says a lot of how society tends to give pretty people (esp. women) the benefit of the doubt.

As for a favorite fictional witch? I recently binge-watched the TV show American Horror Story: Coven. Misty the swamp witch was my favorite. She embodied the image of the ideal witch (in my opinion). She had a childlike innocence and sense of  wonder. She was a wounded healer; an outcast, rejected and murdered by her own community, living all alone in a magical little cabin in the swamp (after she returned from the dead, of course!). Also, she wore really cool clothes and was a big Stevie Nicks fan. Yep, I’d say she’s my favorite— and that show was AWESOME!!!

Would you rather be a good witch or a wicked witch? Why?
A good witch, of course! I’d rather have the consequences of white magic come back to me (times three) instead of black magic.

What’s up next for you?
Much of the same. Writing my heart out, reading, learning, loving, and living!
