The Asterisk Anthology: Volume 2
1. What’s your favorite color and why?
My favorite color is red, hands down. It has the same qualities I try to breathe into all of my work: ferocity and passion.
2. What Southern state and/or city do you like best, and why?
At the risk of sounding too predictable, I suppose I would have to say Nashville, Tennessee, if for no other reason than because it’s my hometown. All of my fondest and earliest memories are there, so it has sentimental value.
3. What do you like most about Southern Gothic?
What I like most about the Southern Gothic is what I like most about the horror genre at large: it’s capacity to transform the familiar into something unfamiliar or uncanny, even sinister or grotesque. The brand of horror I’ve always found to be the most compelling (I mean the kind that really lingers in the mind) is the kind that sets me on familiar ground before swiftly and ruthlessly pulling the rug out from under my feet. That’s the effect I try to achieve with my horror: I’m far more interested in getting under the reader’s skin by making him or her uneasy, rather than just shouting “boo!”
