Samantha Stephens: Winning by a Nose

SamanthablackAfter the outright television villainy of an evil witch like Evelyn Poole, we needed to detox with another good witch, namely Samantha Stephens (Elizabeth Montgomery), the main character from the classic sitcom, BEWITCHED.

Samantha, herself centuries old, an immortal witch, tries to fly the straight and narrow at the behest of her mortal husband, Darrin. But her witchy family and her own considerable powers will not be denied. Sam’s a good cultural ambassador for witches, in that she always tries to do the right thing, and causes more mischief than outright harm.

Between the theme song, Samantha’s signature nose twitch, and the campy popularity of the show, Samantha brought witchcraft into American homes at a time when America was still reeling in the wake of real-life witch hunts (albeit of a political variety). It took America from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, a period of particular cultural and political turbulence.

Samantha put up with not one, but two Darrins, both of whom were very 1960s uptight, and she did it with grace and, well, boundless charm.

Samantha Hastily Gets Dressed

The show explored witchcraft as a stand-in for a variety of situations that poked at consumerism, advertising, gender roles, with Sam as the slyly bewitching character able to pull it all off with humor.

Wicked Samantha Stephens Quotes

“Oh, my stars!”

“I am a witch. A real broom-riding, house-haunting, cauldron-stirring witch.”

“I know, I know. No ‘hocus pocus’. So sue me, it was worth it.”
